Calculate chronological age
How to calculate chronological age for assessment
1. Enter date of birth
Use the individual's birth date, not the day the report is being written.
2. Select the test date
Choose the date required by the relevant assessment manual, commonly the testing date.
3. Copy the age
See years, months and days and copy the result into your working notes or report.
Why the calculation method matters
Psychometric test manuals can specify different rules for calculating chronological age. Our calendar option reports complete elapsed calendar months plus remaining days. The 30-day borrowing option uses a fixed 30 days when the day column must borrow from the month column. Neither method should be assumed to suit every assessment. Always follow the manual for your particular assessment and edition.
Important: This tool is for date arithmetic, not diagnostic advice, assessment selection, age eligibility decisions or psychometric score conversion.

Frequently asked questions about chronological age
What is chronological age in psychological assessment?
Chronological age is the time elapsed between a person's date of birth and a selected reference date, usually the date required by the assessment manual. It is commonly expressed in years, months and days.
How do I calculate chronological age for a psychometric test?
Enter the date of birth and the date of testing, then use the age-calculation convention required by that assessment manual. The result can be recorded in years, months and days.
Should I use today's date or the date of assessment?
For assessment age, use the date specified by the test manual. That is often the date the test was administered, not today's date or the day the report is written.
Why do some assessment age calculations use 30-day months?
Some manuals specify a simplified subtraction procedure in which a borrowed month is treated as 30 days. Other assessments may have different rules.
Do I round chronological age to the nearest month?
Only if the applicable assessment manual instructs you to do so. Some manuals specifically prohibit rounding upwards. This calculator displays years, months and days without automatic rounding.
Can I use this calculator for SSAIS, JSAIS, WISC or other psychological tests?
You can use it to perform date calculations, but check the specific test and edition's manual to confirm the required test date, calculation convention, age bands and rounding instructions. This website does not verify assessment eligibility or produce official test scores.
What does an age written as 8;4;12 mean?
It means 8 years, 4 months and 12 days. The semicolon format is a compact way to report an age in years, months and days.
Does this calculator store client information?
The date calculation runs in your browser. This calculator does not submit the dates to an application server or save them in browser storage. Hosting providers may still process basic technical access information. Do not enter names or other identifying information.
Can I calculate age for an assessment completed in the past?
Yes. Enter the historical assessment date rather than today's date. The assessment date must not be earlier than the date of birth.
What happens when the assessment date is before the birth date?
The calculator reports an error rather than producing a negative age. Check the entered dates before using the result.
How are leap years and birthdays on the 29th, 30th or 31st handled?
The calendar-age option counts complete monthly anniversaries, treating a birthday later than the last day of a short month as occurring on that month’s last day. For formal assessments, always use the convention in the relevant manual.
Can I use the age to choose a test norm table?
The displayed age may help with the workflow, but the correct norm table, eligibility range, test date and rounding procedures must be determined using the publisher’s instructions for the exact test edition.
Is chronological age the same as developmental age?
No. Chronological age is based on dates. Developmental age is an interpretation based on developmental functioning or assessment measures and cannot be determined simply by subtracting dates.
Does the method for calculating chronological age differ between psychological assessments?
Yes. Some assessment manuals require particular conventions for subtracting dates, borrowing days, choosing a test date or rounding age. For example, Pearson's WIAT-III guidance describes treating months as 30 days, using the first testing date when assessment takes two sessions, and not rounding age upwards. These instructions should not be assumed to apply to other tests or editions. Always use the manual for the exact assessment being administered. Source: Pearson WIAT-III support.
